GARDEN BUILDING ‘GREENWASH’.
‘Greenwashing’ means misleading consumers or exaggerating about a company or product’s environmental status. Nowadays, because everyone wants a share of the green pound, the greenwashing of consumer products is rife. So how do you make sure you’re doing the right thing and choosing the right building materials for your garden room and the rest of your home?
A simple way to think about building and DIY materials is to ask yourself the question “how close is this product to the natural material it is made out of?”
for example a plank of untreated larch cladding, grown in Scotland has been chopped down, transported to a sawmill and cut into a plank then planed. compare this with a manmade PVC cladding board. This is made from crude oil drilled under the sea or imported thousands of miles from the middle East. It has then been taken to an oil refinery and onwards to an industrial plant that makes PVC and finally to a factory specialising in making PVC cladding. Very industrial, not very green.
